Due to circumstances well within her control, Humble Scribe found herself en route to Jerusalem on Saturday evening, leaving it to Deliverance, once again, to deliver another terse missive from the field.

"We circled up (wait -- there was no flour circle) at Goldmember's home during a wierd sandstorm. We ran and ran and ran all of it uphill. We were told to 'keep it down' by some children because their parents were trying to sleep.

"At the 1/2 way point we were instructed by Goldmember to sing the 'international' song 'Heivenu Shalom Aleichem'. Apparently she had heard sung in many different lands. While the Anglos looked on in amazement, the 3 people that knew the 'famous international' song belted out the tune. I know that in Alabama, a foreign land to many of you, they do not know that song, nor have ever heard it sung.

After about a 7.5 kilometer run we were back to the non-circle for down downs follewed by a delicious On-on. Also, Miss Maayan made her Hash debut. She is lovely. And Goldmember is an excellent grandmother."

Directions from Herzliya (just in case):
Take Route 2 (Namir Road) towards Tel Aviv.
Go past Einstein intersection and turn RIGHT at the next intersection onto Shai Agnon St.
Turn LEFT on Meir Ya'an St. and into the Kochav HaTzafon neighborhood, which apparently only has 3 streets and a bunch of parking lots. Now look at Russian Bride's map for the area marked with a RED cross.

This week's Hash Trash will be short, due to a shocking lack of field reports. The following terse missive was submitted to Humble Scribe by a participant in Saturday's run:

“The run was in Herziliya Center. After speaking to some Ein Gedi runners on the phone, we circled up and the runners and the walkers were off. Because I was walking, I can only tell you about the walk. It was lovely. We met for the halfway point at a little out of the way park where we sang “How much is that doggie in the window?” in honor of our hare Doggie Style.” Down-downs are listed below.

Goldmember, In and Out, Loose Caboose, Taco Balls, Turn-Ho, Twin Peaks, R2D2, C3PO and Boston Creamed were not at the run as they were down at the Dead Sea participating in the Ein Gedi Half Marathon. It was lovely, too. Here's proof:

IMPORTANT: There will be an On-on after the run. Due to the tyranny of family members, Goldmember can no longer cook on the Jewish Sabbath, but will provide soup and roasted potatoes (all prepared prior to Shabbat). Hashers are invited to bring Kosher meat, salads and dessert items. Oh, and beer, too.

Directions:
Take Route 5 to Route 6 heading NORTH.
Get off the the Kochav Yair exit.
Follow the signs to Kochav Yair/Zur Yigal (I think they lead to Route 444)
Turn LEFT into Kochav Yair/Zur Yigal, past the gas station on your left and the entrance gate.
Go through the first roundabout/traffic circle*
Go through the second roundabout/traffic circle.
Take your first LEFT into Kinnarot St.** and look for parking.

Yes, it's true. Sadly, the Eilat Three Borders Half Marathon will not take place this year. While at the Ein Gedi run, Goldmember got ahold of the organizer, who mumbled something about lack of interest or lack of sponsorhip, or both. Bummer. We are now seeking an adequate replacement for this run.

The Dog Ate My Blobs

Call us "half-Hashed". That everybody knowingly parked at the wrong starting point and then had to move, that the Hare forgot to map out a walkers trail and quickly tried to make up for it with a hastily drawn geometric-shaped scrawl (see below), and that the dearth of flour blobs was explained away with "I think maybe some dogs ate them" -- all these facts were indicative of the entire afternoon's tone... fun in spite of the midwinter blahs.
 
At the outset came the big news of the day: the return of Russian Bride to Israel and the Hash after a year away. On Thursday night, a visiting Triar Fruck told the Thirsty Knights Hash he would be showing up, then said he'd forgotten something in the car and returned moments later with a blushin' Russian Bride. The trick was repeated to great effect at Friday's Quiz Night and then again on Saturday -- by that time there was no one left to surprise. Russian Bride will be re-taking up residence at the usual place and is hard at work getting his barbecue grill back. Further details (he mentioned something about water balloons) to follow.
 
The walkers missed the halfway point! Well, who can blame them, with the map they were given (see below). The runners eventually came to their aid and quite an impressively large group sang a few rounds of "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot".
 
The Hare warned the runners at the start that they would be trespassing into private property at a certain point. It turned out to be so much more -- a jaunt through someone's back yard that felt like a fast magic carpet ride in and out of Yemen -- and we were back on the brick lanes of fake Holland-y style* suburbia.
 
At a certain point, Triar Fruck was seen wandering into some shrubbery. He later claimed that, as he has a second degree in botany, he had merely stopped to examine some weeds. RA Dead Boring, who has a botanical background himself, thought the excuse had a whiff of fertilizer about it and called for a Down-down. Strangely, no one ever asked exactly what kind of weeds Triar was Frucking about in...
 
As for that walkers map, it really has to be seen to be believed, so here it is:

Doggie Style writes: "Saturday's hash will be in Herzilya Center. Starting point will be near corner of Jabotinsky and Pinsker streets, a hundred meters up Pinsker on the right side.
 
Directions: 
 
From the north, or HP area, exit Namir Rd (Rt 2) at Rabin junction, go east toward Kfar Shemaryahu (away from HP).  After crossing the railroad and the off ramp from the Ayalon, turn right onto Jabotinsky st.  After about 1 kilometer, turn left onto Pinsker St across from the Performing Arts Center/Air Force House.Go a hundred meters or so, you will see an open field on the right where hares will be waiting. 
 
From the south, or Tel Aviv area Exit Namir (Rt 2) at HaSira, or exit the Ayalon at Shivat Hakokhavim junction, turn east toward Herzilya Center.  This will be Shivat Hakokhavim street, which turns into HaRav Kook.  Turn left on Jabotinsky past the Seven Stars mall, go about half a kilometer, then turn right on Pinsker Street, go a hundred meters, park on right, where hares will be waiting.

A Quick One

There's a Hebrew word for the kind of weather we're having: Foo-ya! Humble Scribe has really tried her best to keep her vow and refrain from commenting on the real weather, preferring instead to remark only on the varying degrees of summer heat. But this week's downpour has proved too much. It's like something (or someone) is out to get the Holyland Hash...

The timing was eerie. It was almost as if some wicked rainmakers actually looked down upon our hares from the heavens, bided their time* while the trail was being set in cloudy, breezy but dry conditions and then... opened the floodgates the moment the Hash began.

Need more proof? The sun came out at the halfway point to enjoy a round of "Father Abraham"**, then disappeared as the second half began. All this wetness led the runners to complain that there weren't enough flour blobs. In her defense, the Hare has claimed "there were blobs the size of grapefruits but they got washed away" and noted that at one point the rain and wind was so strong "it was coming down horizontally". Foo-ya!

In short, the Hare reports, "It was wet and miserable, and nobody followed the trail because they said there were no blobs". A moment of levity was provided by a stuck car*** whose driver was ably assisted by Bravefart, Goldmember and Twin Peaks while the male Hashers, no doubt in the name of equality of the sexes, looked on.

The real man of the hour, however, was big-brother-to-be Swamp Monster, who actually saved everyone's life by warning of an oncoming car and averting disaster. You're never too young to be a hero, so here's to him!****

From Route 2. Take the Kfar Shmaryahu exit onto HaMaapilim St. heading towards Herzliya (and away from Pituach and the beach). HaMaapilim becomes Menachem Begin. Follow Begin till the very end, then turn LEFT onto Yerushalayim St. heading towards Ra'anana. Turn LEFT onto Derech HaPark/Ahuza St. junction and follow Derech HaPark almost to the end. Parking lot and gas station will be on your RIGHT.

There is a great photo circulating around the web right now that shows just how thick the fog that blanketed Israel's central and Sharon regions on Saturday actually was. The after-effects of the fog were just as dramatic: flour blobs congealed, broke into bits and were swallowed up by Mother Earth. At least, that's the theory floated by the Hare as Run 667 threatened to end even before it began.
 
Flour! My kingdom for some flour! Not only were blobs few and far between, but the Hare actually admitted to scant markings within the national park area; she would be punished later but still, we must applaud her commitment to environmental awareness.
 
Dr. Do-little gave Fer Fox Sake a bit of a scare by appearing and disappearing, as is his wont, without even any fog to conceal him. His powers are truly amazing and it's unfortunate that Uri Geller named his new heir without witnessing Dr. D's abilities.
 
The second half took the runners down to the beach -- the hard way. The Hare and RA conferred and erred as to which cliffside path to take, leaving the hounds to scramble through narrow channels, eventually having to leap inelegantly to terra firma. Scrapes were disinfected in the Eastern Mediterranean, a body of water famous not so much for its healing properties but more for being the regional backwash of marine pollution.*  
 
The Down-downs celebrated the return of Bravefart, who is treating her Achilles heel with shoe therapy (six pairs of flats to replace her high heel collection), Loose Caboose and Turn-Ho's coming on time**, and the arrival of Virgin Gayle, who narrowly missed having her running shoes baptized for the second time*** by an overly enthusiastic Diablo.
 
What won't Fer Fox Sake do for Fox's sake? Rupert Murdoch's empire was clearly set to be bankrupted by the amount of vacation time accrued by FFS who instead graciously agreed**** to take the two months off and go shark diving. Hey, it's not as exciting as a tour around Iraq or last summer's Lebanon war, but life can't be that fun all the time. We wish the RA a great trip and will muddle through in his absence, ably led by Ass. RA Dead Boring.*****
 
* I am NOT whinging, just pointing out a fact.

**** Meaning: Bowed to the pressure of News Corp's Inhuman Resources department.

The record of run 666 which will appear in the Holyland Hash bible and be the guiding light to future hashers for millions of years should read FRB DEAD BORING (thou shalt not bestow such an honour on one so unworthy as Diablo)." Twin Peaks writes: "Head North on the Coastal Road (#2) pass Netanya, Mikmoret, etc til the Hadera Exit (before Caesarea).  After exiting the highway, make a right turn towards Hadera (white sign), [if you continue straight, you will be right back on the Coastal Road towards Caesarea]. Turn Right at the first set of lights (towards Givat Olga), cross over the bridge. Turn right following the signs towards Tel Aviv. At the T, make a left (towards the sea) following an orange sign that reads Givat Olga Holiday House).  This is Ishay Street.  Go straight heading towards the sea, make your first right into Park Nahal Hadera (Hadera River Park).  Big Sign in English. Follow paved road towards the Power Station til the sandy parking lot on right.
